Flood Warning 065FAG009

Groundwater flooding in the Candovers and Old Alresford

Warning added: 12:16, 11th January 2021

At Preston Candover and Old Alresford, groundwater levels are high, but they are just stabilising following 3 months of above average rainfall (recorded at Bishop’s Sutton). At the lower end of Preston Candover village, groundwater is close to emerging in cellars. From Monday (11/01/2021) until Friday (15/01/2021) further rain is forecast. Forecast totals are not overly large, but if this rain does affect the catchment, then groundwater levels will continue to rise (albeit very slowly) over the next 7 to 10 days. From this time onwards, it may begin to prevent septic tanks from operating effectively in Old Alresford. It may also affect cellars in a very small number of properties at the lower end of Preston Candover village. Widespread groundwater flood impacts are not currently expected. We continue to monitor the forecast. If you use pumps to help reduce water levels, please ensure they can operate. This Flood Alert will be updated by 12:00 on Wednesday 20/01/2021.
